What's a Burl?
Burls form on some trees after they suffer injury or disease. This disruption of its normal lifecycle causes the tree to form a "bump" of scar tissue. The inside of the bump tells that tree's recovery story through a unique blend of irregular swirls, dormant buds and contrasting hues. Most trees don’t form burls because they aren’t required to suffer disruptions, so they aren't given the opportunity to create these masterpieces. Burls are prized by woodworkers because of the unique beauty each piece possesses. Burls are notoriously difficult to work with because of the irregularities that define their beauty. A skilled artisan’s perspective, planning and patience are required. The end result is recovery in the palm of your hand - a perfect gift for someone who is writing their own recovery story.
